Ian Scot
Composer & Sound Designer
… and artist
“... music by Ian Scot, would be reason enough to see the show.” - NYT Critics Pick - If Pretty Hurts…
Ian Scot is a composer, sound designer, and interdisciplinary artist, specializing in new works development, immersive installations, and creative engineering solutions for live events.
During a residency in Chicago, Ian created the beginnings of what would become his current interdisciplinary practice exploring the intersectionality between sound, text, movement, and visual arts. This new model, inspired by the work of Jerzy Grotowski and Bill T. Jones then workshopped with Curious Theatre Branch and Goat Island Performance Group, guides participants through exercises that use their personal narratives to devise short-form interdisciplinary works.
In 2021, Ian had the distinct privilege of capturing the first new recording of the Debussy melody written for “La Fille aux cheveux de lin”, with a new ending transcribed from the notes of singer Marie Vasnier’s diary which is held in the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The recording was produced by the Frederick R. Koch Foundation and featured by Classic FM.
Ian has pursued an extensive career working with educational programs. In NYC, Ian has worked with students in programs at Roundabout Youth Ensemble, NYU Tisch, and Berklee NYC. As an adjunct instructor at Muhlenberg College, Ian pioneered the advanced level Art of Sound Design class while composing original music for over 50 student-directed productions in the New Voices/New Visions programming. His academic work primarily focuses on teaching the creative process, collaboration, exploration of the artistic voice, and critical listening skills. With the Youth Theatre Program at Laguna Playhouse, Ian has worked with many young actors on the stage, creating an emboldening and enriching process for young actors to learn how professional theatre is made. More recently, working with the Musical Theatre Writing students at Berklee NYC, Ian has worked to help produce the WDMT showcase every year, an opportunity for writers to present fully produced work for industry leaders in NYC.
Ian is a proud collaborating artist with MoroMedia, a group of designers and artists in the East Village led by designer Joey Moro. His work with MoroMedia provides behind-the-scenes and bespoke audio and video solutions for some of the most innovative projects in NYC.
Ian received his MFA in Sound Design from Yale School of Drama and an MA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago.
